Tyler on Stop Writing Book

From Weekly I/O#99

Stop writing traditional books because AI will answer questions faster than a book can reach readers. Focus on high-frequency writing or "Truly Human" books.

Podcast: The Most Practical Conversation About Writing With AI – Tyler Cowen

After writing over 20 books, Tyler Cowen mentioned that he might not write any more books because of AI.

AI is progressing rapidly, making many book topics obsolete by the time they can be written and published. Tyler specifically states that AI is already better than humans at answering questions about economics and economic models in many areas.

Many topics Tyler would have considered writing about are now obsolete because AI can handle information gathering or writing better. Predictive books or books about the near future, for example, no longer make sense due to the speed of AI development.

Therefore, Tyler is pivoting. Instead of writing books, Cowen plans to do more "super high-frequency writing" (like on Substack, blogging, and Twitter), which is better suited for covering rapidly changing topics, much of which will be about AI itself.

And for books, he believes the "truly human books" will stand out in the AI-rich future. These books require personal experience, subjective perspective, fieldwork, interviewing, or memoir/biography elements that AI cannot sincerely replicate.
